I think it worthwhile to report back on my experience, though this may be a bit dated in light of recent closure of the local sales lots. About a month ago I flew to SAN to pick up a BMW 740i through the Rent-2-Buy program. Was reluctant to fly but vehicle was $7000 cheaper than comparable SFO vehicles that I had previously driven. I soon discovered this was likely due to a small paint ding on the lower part of the driver door (that I expect will be easily touched up) and a few minor fender dents that were not properly repaired but should be easy to fix (interestingly not reported on CARFAX). I took a 400 mile "test drive" back home and contacted the Pleasanton lot to close the deal.
Unfortunately the local sales team had no clue on the paperwork and gave me a draft Bill of Sale, which was useless as my credit union needs an executed Sales Agreement before they will cut a check (understandable). So I had to make another trip to get a signed Sales Agreement, and then a 3rd trip to do the closing paperwork and registration with the Finance Manager (who was the only person who seemed to understand the paperwork requirements). Still have not received a straight answer on the location of the 2nd key - I offered the sales guy $100 cash if he could obtain it but I was given different answer by everyone. They used to attach it to the rental key set but the SAN manager told me they now ship all the 2nd keys to Oklahoma. Who knows.
To top it off, a month after closing I received 2 automated calls today from the Vehicle Control Dept. informing me that the rental return was overdue. The VCD then referred me to the Rent2Buy Dept, who then advised that the Pleasanton office never closed the rental contract. Incompetence at many levels and a refusal by anyone to take ownership of the problem. If this is not resolved soon I will escalate and my next letter will be to the General Counsel's office and state AG. It would be interesting to see how VCD plans to retrieve the vehicle as the title is now in my name with DMV and BMW. Maybe they will use the 2nd key LOL.
Overall I am very happy with the vehicle and the deal (the car is actually worth more than I paid, even after transaction costs). But be prepared to deal with many morons if you go this route. Final tip: Get an AAA membership as you receive a $325 discount on all vehicles!
