Can a fare/ticketing expert explain rollovers?

My non-ref LAX-JFK-LHR fare has now gone down in price. Trip is a few months from now. The AAgent I spoke with said they won’t provide back the difference in fare (as a voucher/credit) as they don’t “rollover” tickets any more, what with the change fee elimination. If I ask to change the routing, I assume then they will recalc the fare and provide the difference back? What if one just changes one or two of the flights to an earlier time, but remain same routing—does that provide for the lower fare credit back?
