Another example of running out of fuel

The Canadians have run out of fuel before as well. On 24 Aug 2001, an Air Transat A330-200 ran out of fuel after it sprung a leak (bad maintenance). The right engine quit at 39K and the left engine quit 13 minutes later. The leak had been noticed an hour earlier, and the flight was already diverting towards Lajes military airfield in the Azores. After both engines lost power, the plane made it ~20 minutes / ~115 miles. Obviously, a ditching in the Atlantic ocean would have been sub-optimal by comparison. I seem to recall that passengers could tell the flight attendants expected a ocean-ditch and, through their nervousness, were telegraphing a near-certain death. One detail that I seem to recall is that the back-up power, provided by the propeller dropped into the wind, is not sufficient to extend the flaps, so the landing was at very high speed, damaging the gear badly.
