Weren't they already charging double?

When I studied in NB, I would drive to Bangor or Portland ME, or even Boston and save a bundle.

Made for a fun experience at immigration at YOW once, trying to explain why I exited and entered Canada within a 24-hour period in the manner I did. Drove to Boston through the NB/ME border, and then BOS - YOW (saw an old friend landside) - ZUR(?).

Edit: I see Adam Smith beat me to it re: prices before. Another anecdote that's kind or relevant. Once I had to drive back to Freddy in a US rental, and that was at the time when some asinine Canadian regulations still forbade it. The border agent was a total jerk about it. Threatened to impound the car and make me pay nearly 5-figure HST, and then railed about Vancouverites who would fly from Seattle to MA or ME, and then drive into Canada. The worst thing was, I was squarely within the exemption (car broke down, returning home).
