You can see from the answers, there is some variation between hotels, and that has been my experience as well. Generally, if you get the digital key, you can go direct to your room. But there can be a fair number of reasons you need to stop at, or later visit the front desk. In our most recent stay, the digital key only worked on inside doors, but not the gates on the edge of the property..for those you needed a key card, only available from the front desk. We also got two bottles of water per day, had to collect those at the desk every day.
Seems like we always have questions...meal hours, Diamond food situation...etc. Yes, we can and do call about those as well as visit the front desk.
