I think that a combination of political lobbying by the Australian government(of its NZ counterpart to block Singapore Airlines), use of regulatory bodies (Civil Aviation Safety Authority's Easter grounding of Ansett) and possibly funny goings on with Avalon Airport to discourage investment in a new Ansett - who knows when the deal was done? - basically conspired to bump off Ansett.
