If BA had cancelled first then not only would you have the full refund option but a range of other options open to you in terms of rebooking or other options

but I was faced with the choice of checking all the options before cancelling and making sure we were able to get through to BA to cancel it as it’s been challenging to get through: I did ask if I should wait to cancel but the agent said it would make no difference now or closer to the flight even if BA cancelled it : I was tired and didn’t question it. My fault. We got the avios. Will get the money and the 2:4:1 will be reinstated and extended so in this specific case we are only out the £25-35 or whatever the fee was. Not the end of the world
