I've not experienced any significant delays in getting wallet credits deposited, so I'd say the main disadvantage is the risk that the price changes/flight sells out between cancelling and rebooking. Unless it's the last available seat in the required inventory booking class, this is also a remote risk. When making a "change" you don't have to give up your existing itinerary until the new one is confirmed.
