Yeah, I've had issues with my DL miles booked on CI J and GUC upgraded KLM flights. Each time they look for new inventory (none of course) and they can't/won't get anything waived on partner-metal. Some offer to accommodate on DL operations but that doesn't always work so well. It's particularly frustrating since it's not our fault technically. Can't wait for my call about my Cape Town flights in November....
I had essentially the same thing happen with KLM flights (TATL flight cancelled for the day I booked, and I was rebooked a day earlier), and I called Delta and they contacted KLM, who then agreed to move me to the day later flight without any fuss (and there was no award availability). But AF was a battle, one of the agents told me they are a lot more strict than KLM with partner award tickets.
I also had a KLM flight cancelled that I had used GUCs on, and they moved me to a new flight 2 days earlier after it was cancelled. Fortunately in that case I preferred the auto-rebooking to any other options, so I didn't have to request an accommodation. So it sounds like KLM is more strict with rebooking using GUCs than partner awards.
