Odd that DL/AF are giving the OP a hard time with this... at the very least DL could have opened up space on their own metal as you suggested.
On a later call another Delta agent did offer to route her in J on Delta metal for no additional miles, however those flights involved very lengthy layovers at either JFK or ATL. The non-stop flight on AF was her strong preference, so I didn't make any changes, and thankfully had success today.
