Have you tried asking DL to open up space on one of their own flights? They should indeed be willing to do that. Otherwise, the AF Twitter team can sometimes be helpful.
Other option is call AF and see if they would be willing to add their own flight segment in the reservation, then call DL back for re-ticketing.
Update: Called Delta a couple more times and was getting nowhere fast, so I basically gave up on this. Then today I looked at my wife's booking and noticed it was a 057 ticket number. It was originally a 006 ticket number when issued, but AF must have taken over the ticket when her return flight was cancelled and she was auto-rebooked. I called AF again (I tried once before and they told me to go to Delta since I booked with SkyMiles) and this time didn't mention anything about SkyMiles, and lo and behold we got the day later flight. Everything looks good on both the AF and Delta sites. Just goes to show, sometimes small details can be important!
