I don't know if the complete fare rules are available on the AA website even before booking. Perhaps others know how to access them.

If you want to see the detailed fare rules before booking, use ITA Matrix. Yes, you should probably save them. Here is the thread about Matrix.

If you want to see fare rules after booking, they may be available on ExpertFlyer (searching historical fares) but I've never tried to find historical fare rules that way. Here is the thread about ExpertFlyer.
