I don't quite understand this. You choose two seats (aisle and window) with 100% certainty that you are not going to choose to occupy both of them. I think you are missing the point of why every airline except for Southwest Airlines has seat assignments -- so that you can
choose where you wish to sit in advance of the flight (as opposed to Southwest's choose when you board).
So far I have never been assigned a middle seat between two people who intentially chose a window and aisle. However, if I am, I will request the window seat. If you refuse to switch me to the window seat, then I'll stick with my assigned middle seat (same situation as this thread but exchanging window for aisle preference).
I hate aisle seats and would be perfectly happy sitting in a middle seat if you insist on keeping the window seat. The problem I have with this tactic as described in this thread is the childish behavior of having a conversation across my head because you want to sit together but you also want to dictate where everyone else sits. In that case, rather than put on headphones (I don't have any) or earplugs (don't have any), I'll just join you in your conversation.
