I think I have a solution for frequent flyers that really want the onboard experience without going anywhere. How's this?
Take a Polaris-equipped plane overnighting at a hub and not needed until later the next day. Sell the J window seats to singles and the center seats to couples. Serve a really nice dinner. The "travelers" get a nice night's sleep, followed by a nice breakfast in the morning. Then they depart. The difference? The plane never backs away from the gate. Pipe in a soundtrack of cabin sounds at 35k feet. No wasted fuel. No pilots needed. Just some FA's that want to earn some extra money and one additional service by the cleaning crew.
