I did AMS-CDG-TXL in J last month, I also had missed the update on surgical masks only and no cloth masks. I was stopped at the gate in AMS, gate agents had extra masks available. Same on the other three flights.
My guess it's not just about effectiveness, but also easier to check when cabin attendants walk by, when everyone is wearing the same mask. With patterned masks it's sometimes harder to see if they are worn correctly.
