Well, I guess it is a mix of:
1) OTAs can put together itineraries which you cannot conveniently book online on airlines websites
2) Sometimes OTA have access to discounted tickets which make them a few bucks cheaper which for a lot of people means: Why should I pay 1.000 to LH if I can pay 991 to Expedia for exactly the same product?
3) A lot of people don't even know which airlines serve which market/routes while an OTA will list a lot of options to go from A to B and makes it easy to book those
And if everything goes well... nobody will ever complain. I have friends which for years book only via Orbiz and Expedia and never had a single problem. So, why should they reconsider until they had their first bad experience?
