I think the way it works with Unifi is they use the 5GHz radio for backhaul so the 2.4GHz is the only one available for users.
I believe they can do both.
The first AP would have to be wired to the router/switch, assuming you are using a USG as the router. From there you can mesh them together if you want, but wire is always king.
