There seem to be some misunderstandings around here about the two basic FHR options. For the past two years or so, when you book FHR, you are offered two options:
  1. Prepay, and earn 5x MR points. While "prepaid" these rates are subject to the usual cancellation rules, typicaly either 1 or 3 days prior to check-in. These reservations book via Amex Travel, which in turn books through Expedia. This is not subject to legitimate debate. It is a fact.
  2. Pay at property, and earn 1x MR points. These reservations book through Platinum Travel Services.
The prices are exactly the same for both options; the differences are (a) prepay or pay at property, (b) accrue 5x or 1x MR, and (c) book via Expedia or PTS.

While I have no data, I would expect that many are now booking the prepaid rates for the substantially better MR accrual.
