I don't understand the comments above that the CEO's job is to be effective and not liked. They aren't mutually exclusive.
Edit: If anything, the two qualities can be symbiotic.
Coming from a Military background, my views may be a bit skewed. But I have worked for some really “non-people, task-orientated” Air Officers and indeed Generals in my time. As a fairly senior officer, I was just “Office equipment” without even deserving acknowledgement of a cheerful “Good morning, Sir” as we passed in a corridor at MoD. Oh, yes, they ‘achieved’ ... making 4* rank, but being frequently derided for their HR skills by those who had had the misfortune to serve under them. It was a succession of such “Leaders” that persuaded me to leave the RAF and take early retirement.
There were others too, who were IMO great HR characters and whom I have had the pleasure to serving under (from all 3 Services, actually). Some of them made 3*/4* rank too. Were they also great achievers? Basically yes, but then people would go the extra mile for them when needed.
IMO, WW and AC fall firmly into the first category ... task orientated, as they should be, but perhaps not the nicest of bosses on the “People” metric.
