It seems like SkyRoam won't use satellite coverage in remote "land" area:
Skyroam will work by ports or on land where there is cell reception, but not far out at sea (only satellite technology is available far from land).

OP if you just need txt for emergency, go with Garmin inReach. It's probably the cheapest satellite TXT available.
