Keep in mind that many ski resorts have limited reciprocity for season passholders and in many cases this reciprocity includes discounts on lodging, etc. Doesn't necessarily make it "intuitive" but not completely unintuitive either.
I have lots of friends who have season passes in Tahoe and still go to Colorado or Utah every winter on reciprocity benefits. The snow is also completely different in the Rockies than it is in the Cascades or Sierras. Or so the ski snobs tell me, I do not downhill.
