I'll set aside this mythical notion of what you "should" have paid, and ask a logistical one: is there a tool anywhere that will tell me what the lowest airfare was between two cities for a travel date in the past and a specific booking date in the past? Forget about HCT - I'd love to see and use that tool if it exists. It sounds like a big data exercise but I could see someone finding value in the analysis you could do with it.
