The problem was that you changed your address to overseas. Would you have just changed it to a local address for example a hotel or friends home I'd say there wouldn't have been an issue.
The phone response from supervisor I got was every time card is renewed, there is a check on credit rating as well as valid IDs. It's possible this is targeted as I had to provide a copy of my foreigners card to get the Super Flyers VISA approved.Of course, my non-Japanese address didn't help things. It was a fun few years while it lasted. I since focused on Asiana instead.
