I think "everyday spending" translates to "merchants that pay us a high merchant fee". The reason why they won't tell you is because they are always cagey about the merchant fee and don't want to reveal how much they charge each one.

Sounds like a bit of a con though, if they don't tell you which ones give more points, how can you know where to shop?
