I remember reading a week ago an interesting article regarding how cases where assigned to a region.
It stated that cases were assigned the the city of residence of the patient.
In other words a Parisian on holiday in Nice would be counted in the Paris statistics.
I cannot find the article again, nor even remember. which media. I think that it was in Linternaute. I have no idea how reliable and extensive that effect is.
That wasn't my understanding but I agree that would change things so will try to see if I can find more info. I don't doubt what you have read, but I'll admit to being a bit sceptical for at least two reasons:

- when I did a test myself in a walk in centre at least, there was no question about residence, just the address, phone, and email where I could be reached (I would presume most people would indicate just that, even a hotel rather than residence). The paperwork was in fact minimal. Maybe tests operated in traditional labs might have more info though, and the walk in is free, but lab ones have a cost reimbursed by social security so in their case, they could use social security info to recoup residence (if they have time to waste! ). That said, in Nice at least, the walk in testing is plentiful and located very prominently (e.g. on the main city square, etc) so I suspect they account for a large proportion, not sure about elsewhere;

- if the positive tests are ascribe by origin rather than testing location, what do they do with the many foreigners having tests done? Would they not be included in stats as I can't imagine the French asking for the UK or Italy to add x cases to their numbers because of someone who has been tested in Nice or Marseille?
