The phone check is an interesting topic, which I followed on places like Caravanistan's forum. The consensus prior to my visit was that China installs an
app, both on Android and iOS, which is also used for monitoring purposes (some overland cyclists reported that they were called by police when attempting to camp in the wild, due to the long distances involved, and that police patrols had an uncanny ability to find them). My phone, though, was - and still is! - an ancient iPhone 5S given to me out of piety by my sister-in-law when she upgraded, and is running on a very old iOS version. In that case, I'm told, it simply does a 'scrape' of all the information and filters it for information not suitable to Xinjiang.
