Most of the times I don't use the annual certificates organically. I end up staying at a hotel BECAUSE I have a certificate. To me that's only worth $50-$75. It would be worth a little more if they credited equivalent points that could be rolled over or used with more flexibility. YMMV.
As a Globalist I’ve had luck in getting them converted to 10k points after expiration, as recent as April.
