TYP points always expire if you change from a TYP card to non-TYP card (the Costco card is not TYP card, is it?).
The only way to keep TYP points from expiring when you downgrade is to downgrade to another TYP card (such as the no-AF Rewards+ card).
Even DoubleCash isn't a TYP card, even though you can convert its cashback to TYP.
