Had to travel to and from NY this weekend. My experience at Hilton and Marriott was night and day. Stayed at the Hampton Inn Erie, PA. Complete contact less from booking to checkout. Only said hi to a person coming out of the back. Room was sealed with Tape to show that the room had been cleaned and untouched, high touch items like the remote was wrapped. Face masks in all public area and people adhering to it. Only grab and go bags for breakfast. Guests had to mask to get coffee if you were so inclined with a big standup of hand sanitizer before you could get to the coffee.
Last night I stopped in Iowa City/Coralville. Booked a residence inn from a fuel stop 45 minutes up the road. Arrived at hotel and people (children with a few parents) running around the pool area in and out. Front desk staff came down and told me they didn't have a room for me, they were completely sold out. Their sister property FI also was sold out (website showed rooms at both-maybe staff hadn't been able to clean them?) Helped get me set up with Spring Hill Suites CoralVille a couple of miles away. Arrived at hotel and the dining area had probably 15 people sitting and drinking (the usual byob crowd) wo SD or mask. (Also in front of me two young girls in swim suits with no shoes buying food from the pantry). Clerk wearing a mask. Paid for my room, got my key and proceeded to the elevator. Entered the elevator and they had a hand sanitizing station in the elevator which I haven't seen before. But it was empty (the next morning same situation in the other elevator). Go to my room, appeared clean but nothing seemed different than pre-covid. Got up in the morning and breakfast was in full swing. The clerk the night before had mentioned they had breakfast but said 90% of the stuff is wrapped. I guess I was picturing individual portions factory sealed but they had just saran wrapped the muffins, bagels etc. The silverware was still in a open container and the plates laying out in a stack. (ie multiple people reaching in) They had tables marked off but only a handful had masks even when getting food. Grabbed a couple of bananas and left. So while the hotels was likely loosely following covid precautions they didn't seem intent on having their guests do the same.
If this is typical of Marriott I will be given more business to Hilton going forward but these were my first stays since the start of March.
Unrelated to my hotel stay I also noticed that on Friday every place I stopped people were masked and following social distancing for the brief times I was there. (rest areas/gas stations in IA, IL, IN, and OH) Coming back on Saturday one rest area in OH had numerous guests wo masks, and the when I stopped at the same exit in IA to get gas the station on the North side had almost no masks or SD going on. Maybe during the week supervisors are present to make sure things are being followed? I thought the country was on the right track on Friday and than I was so disappointed in what I saw on Saturday.
