That said, I don't quite agree with AA on the evoucher I received a few weeks ago.
AA indicated canceled flights credit could be used until Dec 2021 I bought a ticket for less than the credit, and the remaining credit e-voucher only shows valid for a year from the date I used the first part of the credit. I assume the expiration date applies to when I can use the voucher to buy a ticket, not when travel has to be completed, correct? I also assume that purchasing a refundable ticket would give me a voucher for a new date if that ticket was canceled, or if I used the voucher for a ticket costing less.
I would say that I am not sure even if most agents really know the rules.... probably because it seems rules keep getting adjusted or changed.

That would be a different situation. If the airline cancels the flight, you are entitled to a full refund to original form of purchase, so play money wouldn't come in to it
completely agree.... and of course once this current virus state hopefully calms down.. we will see less and less of this...
