That's strange, especially because Portuguese passport numbers also include letters... Clumsy as TP tends to be, I would expect their site to at least accept Portuguese passport numbers...
Perhaps there is some other character that's creating the problem (a dash or a space or something else?).
If all else fails, you can try and contact TAP to try to figure out what's going on.
