I had the opportunity to fly YYC to YYZ on August 3, 2020 on a 787 and have a few observations:
- the AC Airport staff made a number of audible comments among themselves about how they are terribly understaffed for the volume of passengers now coming through;
- the Maple Leaf Lounge was closed with no indication they've made any changes at all - my boarding pass contained a notation about "invitation to lounge"
- J on the 787 was full; PE looked like more than 50% capacity; Y also looked nearly full;
- the domestic gates were busy but you could see to international and US departures which looked dead;
- the lunch/dinner cold box was pretty gross with the desert being inedible - my kid would not eat anything but the bread and some of the salad;
- "signature" bedding was back wrapped in sealed plastic which was a nice touch (pillow, comforter, cover all included);
- drink service was nice and, as reported, an okay selection of individual bottles and cans as options - all the major staples are present - flight attendants made the rounds to provide top ups (on domestic business you often could not get a sparkling wine unless you encouraged them to borrow from the Buy On Board or if the flight was already catered to go international on its next flight . . . this is an improvement);
- there was an announcement that there would also be complimentary soft drinks in the back - I don't know if that happened or not;
- I brought out the Lysol wipes by my seat and scrubbed off obvious dirt and grease on some surfaces . . . if Air Canada is actually cleaning its seats the cleaners need to try harder;
My overall thoughts were that the flights were getting "back to normal". The masks are still unique. The food is now worse. Service and drinks were slightly different but pretty back to normal - I actually prefer this way. Other than the mask it felt like a pre-Covid J domestic flight on a widebody.
