This is precisely the point I was making to AA on Friday while in their lounge at LAX. It was in the context of premium drinks for OW status holders which have been abolished (and if you wanted to pay for a premium beer then it's $7.50 for a 7 oz pour in a plastic tumbler). I was saying to them that with so few people flying that airlines need to make themselves as attractive as possible at the moment and to be offering services that persuade people to continue to fly with them rather than use an alternative carrier. I could have flown Southwest directly to SJC but instead decided to fly LAS - LAX - PHX - SJC with AA instead. Admittedly this was partly because I got 120 TPs for $127 but it was also because of the lounge access etc.
I don't have any trips with BA until late November so I am hoping that the catering services see some sort of radical rejuvenation before then otherwise I will be hoping that I can rebook onto AA where, at least, they continue to serve hot food. A sandwich and a biscuit really isn't appropriate for a long haul flight. What I did realise from flying this weekend is just how expensive it is to eat at airports if you don't have lounge access (or lounges serving proper food). Two breakfast burritos from Sammy's at LAX on Sunday set me back over $30 for example!
