2) OP has a specific airline in mind
3) OP is probably familiar with the itineraries, dates and aaward redemption charts.
Given the above, the best advice is to call AA with that knowledge and make it happen over the phone.
Telling the OP to look for human interaction (Call AA) was excellent advice in this particular case.
I know you guys love to love your technology computer and apps.
But sometimes a phone call can resolve an aaward problem in 15 minutes (particularly if one is already as knowledgeable as the OP seems to be).
I would argue that this greatly depends on the agent... some agents are beyond lazy and will tell you that there is no award availability without even trying while others will actually even be willing to search leg by leg.
