He may be hiding his true addiction - "FT disease" - an intractable addiction to Jet A. The disease is characterized by obsessive and compulsive collecting and hoarding of AA miles. Some supplement with electronic or paper VIP coupons, and most sufferers also turn out to be actual card-carrying members! Alcohol merely helps dull the pain...

Being willing to fly SU because of alcohol inducement (or at all) shows a serious addiction to alcohol or some other substance(s).
