I've had this happen to me twice in the past where the flight I was on gets cancelled a day or two before my flight and I somehow end up rebooked in F.
Log into your reservation on AA.com, what does it say for class in the second to right column?
It is also impossible for passengers in two different classes of service to still be on the same PNR, so if the four of you are still on the same PNR, that's one other indicator that your kids have definitely not been reticketed in first.
Have you confirmed from the aircraft assignment and the seat map when you go to try and change seats that they are in fact assigned first class seats? For example, 6A and 6B maybe first class on many 737s, but if you are swapped to certain planes (AKA LUS 321s) those are coach.
