Well, now, it's nice and easy to be smug and sassy from the other side of the velvet rope, but for those of us who have not reached enlightenment, a little understanding would be appreciated.

I have been flying United for over 25 years, almost all of it on my own dime and I have never come close to making elite. So, I hope you'll forgive me for getting a little excited about the thought of achieving a personal goal of mine.

For the record I am not "gonna make 2P on the next trip anyway"; I have two roundtrips to complete before I will reach 25,000 EQM - one is a short 1,000 mile one and the other is a transcon. I asked to be bumped into 2P early so I could at least use the elite lines and bording, and, for the transcon, a chance to get into E+ while there are still seats to be had. You remember what it was like flying long haul in the back, next to the lavs, with your knees under your chin right? Thought so. For a miles grubbing peon like me, the extra 25% of miles I will get for the next two flights will also not go unnoticed.

Here's my request:

After 20+ years
of membership, I am going to reach 2P status for the first time! At
this point , I believe I am about 4,500 miles short of qualifiying for
2P but have apx. 12,000 EQM of booked travel on UA between now and the
end of the year.

Based on the amount of booked travel I have, I was wondering if UA would
consider granting me my 2P status at this time? That way, I can use my
status to obtain E+ seating and advanced boarding on my future
itineraries.

Thank you for your consideration.
and UA's response

Congratulations! Your account was upgraded one level due to your
activity so far in 2004. The status will remain in effect through
February 2005. To keep this benefit uninterrupted through all of 2004,
you will have to earn 25,000 Elite Qualifying Miles or 30 Elite
Qualifying Segments by December 31, 2004.

You will receive your new membership card in the 4-6 weeks. I appreciate
your commitment to United and Mileage Plus.

Please contact us again if you have any questions.

Thanks for choosing United and Mileage Plus!
I guess you don't always have to be a pest to get folks to do nice things for you. A little aloha goes a long way.

[edited to add]

One unexpected thing that happened by getting admitted into 2P early was the 12,000 or so EQM I flew for the remainder of the year earned me the 4 500 mile upgrade certs elites get for every 10,000 EQM flown. I would not have flown enough miles had I waited until I crossed the 25,000 barrier.
