Didn't work. I don't know if I caught it on the plane, at the airport, at the lounge buffet which I ate from, or in town before getting to the airport.
I'm in my 40's, low chance to die from it. At first I thought it was just a cold. It became pretty apparent it was Covid after about a week of symptoms. I was very lucky that I did not develop severe breathing difficulties, but it was still a very tough illness to go through. Had a temperature for almost 2 weeks straight! There were maybe 2-3 days where I started thinking about the possibility of me dying.
I was mortified that I may have passed it onto pax/FAs/hotel & shop employees and I did my best to contact every business involved to let them know. Some of them were very thankful; others never replied (looking at you AF/KLM).
My wife never got ill despite living with me this whole time (possibly assymptomatic). My kid couldn't come home for a month even though school had shut down, because we were quarantining ourselves (something infected members of our government didn't bother to do - leading by example...)
My government (UK) was - similar to yours - in complete denial at that moment in time, and they refused to get me tested, so I have to wait for an antibody test to get absolute confirmation. 4 months on I still suffer from long term loss of the sense of smell. It varies between 20%-50% of my former capacity and I smell weird cigarette smells that don't exist. I'm getting a brain scan next week just to make sure it isn't something more serious.
One of my friends, also my age, came close to dying and was intubed. He still undergoes weekly lung rehabilitation months later. Other friends had much milder symptoms and recovered within days. Thankfully I don't know anybody who died. And also I know nobody who caught it off me.
The silver lining: i know that I'm now probably immune for at least a few years, and I'm less worried about travelling.
Do I recommend travelling to anyone? No! I don't recommend you travel and I don't recommend you go to pubs and bars. I love doing all of this and I fully understand that for some people the relatively low risk of dying from corona is a lesser evil, compared with being prevented from doing the things that you enjoy in life. My parents are in the risk group, and they're now going to parties and restaurants, so they certainly didn't take my opinion onboard. If I could wind back time, i would cancel that trip and stay home for 18 months until a vaccine is found - but that's what I say after this life changing experience. Deep down inside me I know that my old self would have just done the same as my parents.
So the choice is up to you and I won't judge either way. Do make sure you fully understand what you are signing up for. This is not "just a flu", it's more deadly. It's not Ebola either, you have all the chances of surviving if infected. Like people on this thread already said, we can't give you an accurate risk. But you will certainly be at a higher risk when travelling than when staying home. The risk is manageable by taking appropriate precautions. Also it is true that Norway is safer than Texas nowadays, but it does mean going through a Texan airport to get to the promised land.
Thank you for the advice, and I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you’ll fully recover soon.
