At Ellis street they will upgrade you to the full size - something as uninspiring as a Sonata or Camry - and you'll be stuck with it. Mason street location will have a bigger choice of boring cars, but their rates are sometimes higher than those at Ellis.
I agree that $150 is quite a difference, though
Firstboss, thank you, this is
exactly what I needed to know and no one at Hertz could tell me. Since I always rent at airports I am spoiled (although poorer) by having been elevated to Hertz Presidents Circle and having gold service and Ultimate choice. We have gotten some very nice cars, my favorite among them the Infinities. But for this 4 day drive all I really care about is boring and comfortable with room for luggage.
As much as I love picking out really nice cars for my mid-size paid rental, I just can't bring myself to hassle with going 20 minutes in the opposite direction of our trip (SF to Park City) for a car, and dealing with the time and expense of getting to SFO, not to mention getting into someone else's car (Uber, Wingz etc) to do it. It is a quick drive for my spouse to get me to Ellis Street, or honestly I can walk; It is 2 miles.
I was quoted ~$430 for a midsize car from Mason St. and in the meantime decided a full size was better for 4 days of driving and got a ~$530 quite for a full size from Ellis. SFO was ~$570 for a full size. It sounds like Ellis St might give me a full size anyway so maybe sticking with a midsize is a better decision. This is WAY more time and hassle than I ever spend renting a car, but since I may be doing this a lot for a while, I decided I might as well try to figure the non-SFO Hertz system out.
