Had we booked flights with cash, it would seem we would not be entitled to trigger the cancel and refund option, but I don't understand where we stand given is was Avios plus a 2-4-1 voucher booking.

You can now cancel your booking for free (as can a cash-passenger), for a full refund of your 241, avios and charges.
However if the 241, even extended by six months, is not much use to you, you can opt for a Future Travel Voucher instead. This wraps up your booking’s value with an April 2022 expiry so effectively extends your 241, but means BA will hold on to your cash in the meantime.
