In 32+ years of travel have never extended a stay (more likely cut short) so hard to say. Wouldn’t cause me to lose sleep but it Depends on the location. In some states/countries they could arrest you. Others not so much. I have kept a couple of car rentals beyond return time and they were always delighted to bill me extra.
I have had hotels happy to extend stays when there is availability, but also have had a couple of cases where was unable to extend a stay or the rate for the extra night was too high so went elsewhere by choice. For most hotels (which use electronic locks) , it is generally quite easy for it to handle the situation since the room keys will stop working
Car hire companies will generally allow rental extensions, but in some situations ( such as this ) will choose not to. There is no entitlement to be able to extend
