In 32+ years of travel have never extended a stay (more likely cut short) so hard to say. Wouldn’t cause me to lose sleep but it Depends on the location. In some states/countries they could arrest you. Others not so much. I have kept a couple of car rentals beyond return time and they were always delighted to bill me extra.

again completely false. There is nothing to rescind until you buy the car. Hertz treats Rent2Buy as a rental. They agree to reserve a specific vehicle with VIN# but specifically say “don’t show up until we have confirmed” because the vehicles are often out on rentals and they have to make sure they are back and ready for you. I got an email saying mine wasn’t ready, and then a call saying it was. If it is not ready at time reserved you are SOL (see Seinfeld). Similarly I can no show with no penalty.
