If I wanted to extend my hotel stay to 4pm in a hotel where I am entitled to do so, I would do just that!

I think Hertz RAs are written in such a way that the right to extend by up to 24 hours is automatic and spelled out in the contract. There's a fee involved ("extra day"), of course. All disclosed on your RA. But I think you don't need to take any special action to keep a Hertz car up to 24 hours longer than originally rented.
