IMHO, all AMBs should be guaranteed suite upgrades if available for purchase. no need for stupid SNAs.
but for me, i view SNAs as a lottery ticket. you submit your ticket and hope you get a prize. as you know, SNAs are not guaranteed upgrades like hyatt. they are simply an "upgrade alert" to the property. not to mention SNAs operate in a totally different inventory bucket vs what you see on the website. so if youre the type to apply a SNA and forget about it, then I agree with you. no additional work required. however, the whole point of SNAs is that you actually care about the upgrade. maybe not enough to book the suite via cash, but you want the "loyalty program" to work as intended.
therefore, the babysitting nature of SNAs frustrates me. if you apply the SNA and you dont hear anything within the 5th day period, you have to call. then each property has YMMV front desk who have no idea what youre talking about, managers who reject you or tell you to call "corporate". or you get upgraded to a better room aka "partial ocean view" vs red brick car garage. total BS. many times, ive been upgraded to a "junior suite", but it was simply a regular room in a corner which had enough extra space to put an extra coffee table. what a joke. i can get that normally as plat or titanium. so i no longer play the SNA game. i select 5 EQN to hit 75 for the status and free night. after that, i focus on hyatt and hilton.
I think the difference is that when I get the experience of a rejected SNA request, as it is bound to happen eventually. I will probably not follow up beyond asking for an upgrade of some kind at check in.
When, as a titanium, I was not upgraded to a suite at check in, I did not start checking if there were suites available for cash booking and arguing that I should be upgraded to one of those suites. My life is too short for those fights. What can get me really annoyed, though, is when the front desk spends time explaining what a special and nice room they have found for me, and I walk in and it is just the usual standard room. That annoys me far more than not getting the upgrade, If they don't have an upgrade to offer, just say so. But that is something I will provide as feedback after the stay, again I have better things to use my time for than arguing with a front desk clerk.
So far as an Ambassador, my upgrade percentage to a proper suite when not using an SNA is 100%, but as these are late Feb, Mar, and Jul 2020 stays and the hotels accordingly were quite empty so it is probably a very skewed benchmark to look at. Let's see what happens once business returns to more normal
