Help me architect good usage of expiring Companion Fare?
I have a replacement companion fare code that expires on August 8th, 2020. I have quite a bit of travel funds in my wallet (most of it work, some of it personal). Some of it expires Jan 22, 2021 some expires Apr 9, 2021, but most expires July 5, 2021. As long as I track usage, work will be flexible on allowing me to use funds in the best possible manner so as to not waste them.
We live in San Diego and have family in New England (SAN-BOS is one of the reasons I fly AS as much as I can). We canceled our April 2020 trip and tried again for August, but have canceled that. We'd be visiting sets of aging parents, and it just doesn't make sense to spend a day interacting with hundreds of vectors and then go stay under their roof for 2-3 days.
Anyway... likely I'd try to book something for next year, but I want to understand the best way to use companion fares and wallet dollars so I waste as little as possible. I assume that the key would be to book my ticket (using companion fare) before August 8. Is there any thing I should know (ways to extend the validity? inflexibility if I need to cancel again? potential complications that could arise from using the companion fare in conjunction with wallet funds? Complications from mixing wallet funds with different expiration dates?)
