So the Austrian Embassy got back to me and said:

"Oh, as a UK citizen you can still enter like any Schengen citizen. What we have on our web site is wrong."
"Is there a place where I can find that in writing?"
"No"
"So how should I know it is like you describe?"
"Because I say so"

Conversation was in German with classic Austrian disinterested connotation.
My wife and son are leaving this weekend, they have Austrian and US passports so they'll be fine.. I need to be here for a closing that is hard to legally do from Austria hence me being a week behind - it's not classic tourism what I am looking at doing. South Florida is miserable in summer even without Covid - we have a house outside Vienna and one in the mountains - where we really want to be - nice and cool, fresh air - and far from anyone else. We'll take our own car, no public transportation etc., and we'll of course do the proper lab tests before we leave.
