I am sure there are a couple of customers that would be happy to see me, and I probably even own some stakes in some Austrian companies. Any idea what if anything is required to show that one is a "person traveling on business"?

BTW, Tried calling the Austrian embassy. They literally said there is only one guy who knows how this works and due to the pandemic he is working from home and might not be picking up his messages...

Are there currently border controls on flights within Schengen countries? IE, assuming I don't get denied boarding and I show up in some Schengen country with a boarding pass to connect - their border control would be likely happy for me to keep flying on rather than resulting in paperwork. So a couple of confirmed business meetings with evidence, a print out of the Austrian rules having an exemption for business travel - a business class ticket preferably with a return ticket in the not too distant future - would probably get me on a flight to a 3rd party Schengen country - and an airline change at that country to OS - would probably make the transatlantic airline feel comfortable enough. Right now I am thinking MIA-ORD-WAW-VIE. Pretty sure United will let me fly to ORD. I am pretty sure LOT would be fine since I don't want to stay in Poland and under EU rules I seem fine - and by the time I get to OS - probably nobody cares anymore.
It's all a bunch of maybes and probablies. Travelling for business means that you need to be sponsored by a business which has demonstrated an essential need for you to come. Look, if you are trying to come for tourism related purposes, assume the answer is no, at least for the time being.
