I don’t think Canada makes the distinction of airside transit. Even I need a eTA if I need to make the same trip.

HK has airside transit, but I don’t think it matters - HKP arrested the July 1st knifer on board CX251, after clearing immigration. Once doors open in HKG, you’re liable to NSL enforcement.
