Anantara Siam Bangkok = Good Treatment of Repeat Guests
Introduction I reviewed Anantara Siam a few weeks ago and stayed three more times since then and I thought I would provide an update regarding their treatment of return guests and some aspects that I did not cover before. Obviously since I returned a few times it should be self-explanatory that overall I find the product acceptable despite some clear weaknesses. I believe this hotel is the best fit for people who care most about good service and good odds of suite upgrades as GHA Black. I should also mention that this hotel is one of those available to book a room for the covid state quarantine. If I had to return to Thailand in the next few months and if quarantine was still a requirement by Thailand immigration, Anantara Siam will for sure be my choice of where I would be forced to spend 14 days. Check In Immediately upon stepping out of the taxi on my second stay I was greeted by name which was impressive because it’s not like I could consider myself a frequent guest (yet). Upon check-in I was thanked for my previous feedback from the first stay and they addressed each of my points - they showed that they cared about my input. For example they offered to install something on my laptop to boost internet speed and they also changed the breakfast venue. Room Each time I stayed in the last few weeks, I received the Siam Suite so I am 4/4 on suite upgrades at this property. Some might think the success rate is unusually high due to covid but I would mention that suites at Athenee have been fully booked for 2-3 months straight and it’s not been easy to get suites at Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit either because those hotels have long-term guests who took refuge in Bangkok during the virus outbreak. So it remains to be seen how frequently I would have suite upgrades at Anantara Siam in normal circumstances but until proven otherwise I believe suites are easier to come by as an elite of the loyalty program than some other hotels in this price range. On my first stay I had a suite on the 5th floor which had partially blocked views of the sports club due to the BTS sky train track. On the subsequent three stays I had a suite on the 6th or 7th floors and it is surprising how much better the view is by only being one or two floors above. My takeaway is that if someone cares about a good view the best would be to request a room on one of the top two floors. I think in which wing of the hotel we are also makes a difference on the view in addition to which floor.5th floor6th floor7th floorAs I mentioned before, the hardware of this hotel is not the best and has seen better days. I guess after a few stays I got used to it but there were minor issues here and there in various rooms we stayed in, for example one room was only moderately cool and air conditioning less powerful than other rooms. One time none of the channels were working on the TV until we called a technician to fix the problem. Dining The Kasara Executive Lounge remains closed as of the end of June which is a bummer but it’s hard to blame them because it’s the same as some other hotels such as Sofitel Sukhumvit where happy hour is only offered in the restaurant. At Anantara we had the executive happy hour in the lobby lounge once but it’s not the most cozy and private environment. That said, a nice feature is that they offered to bring the canape trays to the room as an alternative which we appreciated, and like on our first stay they were not stingy with alcohol: they regularly brought a bottle of wine with our dishes. Having the option of happy hour in the room is an option not found at other hotels. Also I found that the quality of the food was better than what Athenee is serving these days despite Athenee’s lounge being open. Breakfast has improved since our first stay because it’s now in the restaurant but overall it remains inferior to many other hotels in terms of offerings with a limited a la carte menu. I could order fried rice off the menu but not Pad Krapao Gai, no flat noodle dish with veggies, and soup was only available with egg noodles – when we asked for other choices such as rice noodles the request was denied. So overally they were not the most flexible, and usually 5-star hotels in Bangkok have choices of noodle types for soup. State Quarantine For people considering a trip to Bangkok with the required state quarantine, the two room types available are either the entry level deluxe room or the garden room with terrace. As mentioned above for sure given the list of hotels available for state quarantine I would pick Anantara. The garden room with terrace is one category above the Siam Suite and normally a bit more expensive despite being smaller (52 sqm) than the suite (72 sqm). However the main benefit is that after the first 7 days of quarantine guests are allowed to go on their terrace outside on the ground floor but stay in the cordoned area which would be a nice change from being stuck in the room. They offer housekeeping services 7 times out of the 14-day stay and guests have to go in a designated room while housekeeping cleans the room. A nurse comes to visit guests twice a day every day to check temperature and symptoms. Housekeeping Speaking of housekeeping, on each of our stays it was very well done, always at the time we requested, and they reorganized our messy belongings neatly arranged on the tables, desks, or counters. Pool In Bangkok I do not use swimming pools that much but like the rest of the Anantara hotel, the outdoor spaces are relatively good, including the pool which I thought was decent for Bangkok standards. Gym The gym had a good selection of equipment and covid safeguards in place such as glass dividers between some machines and some other machines deactivated for social distancing. Overall All in all this hotel is not perfect but it has clear strengths such as competitive suite upgrades, the executive happy hour benefit, and service which beats other hotels in this price range such as Athenee, Conrad, and Hyatt Regency. In addition if you can get a room on the 6th or 7th floors facing the sports club, the view is better than many other hotels in the city. You need to compromise on older hardware and I wish they will revert back to some kind of breakfast buffet in the future or beef up the current menu offered.
