reporting back - confirming what is stated above - easy to cancel checkin using the web app and points were immediately redeposited. The app even provides the option to refund the taxes to my account. very nice.

sorry no can do. needed the BP to go through security with my minor child who was flying alone. much quicker and safer than waiting at the counter to get a gate pass (plus can use pre-check). then i "changed my mind" and decided not to fly.
not to worry, i was informed there were only about 30 people on the flight so i don't think anyone was trying to "get my seat"
